Apple Joins Drive for New PC-HD Link
12/28/2005

Apple has joined reportedly joined forces with various firms including Intel, Samsung, National Semiconductor, Silicon Image and others to push for a new interface to connect computers to HDTV sets and similar digital products. The group has created its own specification for UDI (unified display interface), which would eventually replace the VGA standard, which is non-digital.

According to The Wall Street Journal and other publications, UDI would be compatible with HDMI (HD multimedia interface) and would sustain that standard's technology, which is geared primarily toward content protection. HDMI technology is generally supported by Hollywood content creators, who remain fearful that HD movies are highly susceptible to pirating (which is the biggest reason given for why most studios support the highly security-minded Blu-ray format).
