Boeing Drops Internet Connexion
8/24/2006

Boeing announced last week that it has completed a detailed business and market analysis of "Connexion by Boeing" and has decided to discontinue the service. Connexion by Boeing provided high-speed satellite-based Internet service to aircraft.

"Over the last six years, we have invested substantial time, resources and technology in Connexion by Boeing," said Boeing Chairman, President and CEO Jim McNerney. "Regrettably, the market for this service has not materialized as had been expected. We believe this decision best balances the long-term interests of all parties with a stake in Connexion by Boeing."

Boeing said it would work with its customers to facilitate an orderly phase out of the service. More information on the service is available on the somewhat outdated Web site.

Passengers on U.S. domestic flights over land may have another option for in-flight Internet access in the future -- the 800 MHz licenses air-ground service spectrum AC BidCo LLC and LiveTV, LLC won in Auction 65 may be used for Internet access as well as telephone calls.   Print Page
