Coverage Varies on Obama's Speech Announcing the Death of Osama Bin Laden
5/2/2011
WASHINGTON: Regular programming was interrupted Sunday evening by a
special address from President Obama, announcing Osama Bin Laden had been
killed by U.S. Forces. In a 10-minute speech delivered at 11:35 Eastern, the
president announced the death of Bin Laden.
NBC and CBS returned to reality
programming after the speech, while ABC stayed on it with George Stephanopoulos
interviewing survivors of the 9/11 attacks, according to Entertainment
Weekly. The Sacramento, Calif., Fox affiliate’s headline crawl reported
that “Obama Bin Laden” had died, Metro
noted.
All the networks were scooped by a
lone Tweeter in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where Bin Laden’s compound was attacked
by U.S. Navy Seals last night. Sohaib Athar, an IT consultant in Abbottbad, inadvertently reported
the raid live on Twitter.
Overnight Nielsen ratings on the president’s speech
are pending.
