Europeans Back DVB-H Mobile Standards

March 21, 2008

The European Commission has made mobile TV technology Digital Video Broadcasting for Handhelds—DVB-H—an official EU standard.

Though the standard is voluntary, the move is expected to encourage broadcasters and manufacturers to quicken the introduction of mobile video in Europe, according to an account in the Hollywood Reporter.

In the United States, several companies are vying to have their technology become the mobile video standard. For example, LG, Harris Broadcast and Kenwood plan to demo their MPH technology at the upcoming NAB Show, as does Samsung, Rhode & Schwartz with their A-VSB proposed standard.

The European commission also asked governments in the European Union to set aside spectrum for mobile video.

The European DVB-H standard is backed by Nokia, Motorola, Philips, Sagem, Sony, Ericsson and Samsung as well as operators Vodafone, O2 and T-Mobile.
