SMPTE Launches Professional Development Academy

12.28.2007

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) has announced the launch of its Professional Development Academy, a new resource designed to promote the technical and professional advancement of its members.

The PDA will consist of a mix of online and onsite seminars, meetings, tutorials and other resources covering the latest audio and video technologies of interest to television and film engineers. The service will launch on Jan. 17 with SMPTE PDA Now, a live, interactive Webcast, entitled “IPTV-What does it Really Mean and How Does it Work,” which will run from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. (ET). Greg Thompson, chief video architect, Video & Content Networking Business Unit for Cisco, will be the featured speaker.

Beginning in February, Webcasts will take place on the second Thursday of every month and will cover topics such as tapeless acquisition, 3D display technologies, color science and metadata, MXF and non-essence data. SMPTE PDA sessions are available free to SMPTE members; non-members may attend the live events for $49. Sessions will be archived and made available to SMPTE members for later viewing. Registration for the events is available at www.smpte.org.
