ViewSonic Introduces ATSC HD Set-top Box, Touts Free Programming
ViewSonic, known primarily for its computer monitors, is introducing an HDTV tuner that will work with its line digital projectors, LCD, plasma and rear projection monitors. The system supports all ATSC signal formats and has component, composite and S-video outputs. The HD10 set-top box tuner will be available in April at an estimated street price of $399. No details were given on tuner RF performance or the 8VSB demodulator chip used in the HD10.

The ViewSonic press release emphasized the HD10 "allows users to enjoy over-the-air digital programming on HDTV-ready televisions without additional subscription fees or contracts." Gene Ornstead, director of Advanced TV Products at ViewSonic, said "U.S. consumers spend millions of dollars a year on televisions that are capable of displaying digital resolutions, but most are not receiving HDTV content because of the extra fees associated with the process. The HD10 allows them to take full advantage of their advanced televisions without paying extra subscription fees for local HD programming."

Check the ViewSonic
Advanced TV Products web page for more information. As of March 13, details had not yet been posted for the HD10.
