Study: 120 Hz Now ‘Integral’ for LCD HD
It seems that the big come-on for increased frame rates as the next-big-thing for HD marketers last holiday season has some staying power going into the next holiday season, to say the least.

Sold as an effective method to overcome digital video artifacting during high-action sequences (notably live sports coverage), frame rates above the standard 60 Hz are catching on in a big way and seem to be accelerating, according to industry research analyst DisplaySearch.

In its latest findings, DisplaySearch projects that 2009 shipments of 40-inch and larger LCD TV panels with double frame rates (100/120 Hz) and even quadruple rates (200/240 Hz) will reach nearly 17 million units and 4.2 million units, respectively--which is 40 percent and 10 percent, respectively, of all HD LCD units of 40 inches or larger for this calendar year.

In other words, clearly half of all LCD sets sold within these sizes this year will contain some form of increased frame-rate technology.

DisplaySearch finds as the LCD TV industry seeks to differentiate and enhance performance for future product, “double- and quadruple-frame rates have emerged as the solution to motion-blur issues.” The findings point out that some panel-makers are promoting a combination of double-frame rates with LED backlighting as a way to effectively upgrade LCD features.
