HDNet to Premiere BBC Series, Sneak Peek New HD Movie
The fact that Mark Cuban's HDNet channel reaches a very small percentage of U.S. homes hasn't stopped the high-tech entrepreneur from scheduling loads of original HD content on his favorite TV venue.

The latest example is HDNet's announcement this week that it has acquired the HD rights to the first 26 episodes of a BBC sci-fi series, "Torchwood," that set some viewing records when it aired in the United Kingdom. (Unlike in the United States, 26 episodes at the BBC would normally represent at least two full TV seasons.) The series is a spinoff of the long-running "Dr. Who" series, according to HDNet.

"Torchwood," which takes place in Wales, will premiere on HDNet on Monday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. (EDT).

Also, HDNet said it plans to air a couple of back-to-back "sneak peeks" of the new HD film "Closing Escrow," whose week-by-week production and post-production details were blogged by various members of the film team here in HD Notebook, about a year ago, including longtime HD producers Randall Dark and Kristen Cox, as well as the film's director, Armen Kaprelian.

HDNet will air the tongue-in-cheek comedy on Wednesday, Aug. 22, at 9:30 p.m. (EDT), with an encore immediately following at about 11:05 p.m. (EDT). "Closing Escrow" is scheduled to begin a limited theatre run a few days later, and be issued on DVD.

Eleven FCC Scenarios for The 600 MHz Band Plan
I suspect that the estimated $44 billion of auction proceeds do not take into account the fact that some spectrum the FCC will buy cannot be resold because it must be used as guard intervals in the 600 MHz band plan.~ Charles W. Rhodes
