Wavexpress Offers Secure Online Services in Cable Experiment
Wavexpress and cable operators USA Media Group and News-Press & Gazette Co. recently completed the first part of a test of Wavexpress' PC-based entertainment services with cable modem users in Idaho and Missouri.

Wavexpress helps cable TV operators deliver secure broadband content and services. In the experiment, the cable customers received a variety of full-screen, digital video channels stored on their computers. To create them, Wavexpress works with cable operators' available bandwidth and home storage on the PC. The service is delivered via IP Multicast, a broadcast transmission mode that uses a small portion of bandwidth from the cable modem channel to serve multiple subscribers simultaneously. Content is stored on the PC hard disk drive, protected by Wave System's Embassy, a hardware security device that allows on-demand access to cached content.

In the next phase of the trials, content will originate from the AT&T Digital Media Center (ADMC), which will act as the Network Operations Center (NOC). From the ADMC, content will be distributed to the cable headends. The ability to use a national NOC will allow the commercialization of a scalable, end-to-end IP delivery system that will provide bandwidth-efficient delivery of IP content when combined with IP Multicast with secure caching.
