That’s a wrap; putting IBC2009 to bed

October 7, 2009

IBC2009 is a wrap and so are this year’s 13 editions of “IBC Update,” the e-newsletter from the publishers of Broadcast Engineering magazine covering new products, technologies, trends and awards presented at the annual event.

A quick review of both indicates that while attendance of this year’s gathering in Amsterdam was off by 7 percent, IBC remains a vital, important venue for the broadcast and entertainment industry.

Some of this year’s highlights included:
• Total attendance of 45,547 people despite what’s been described as the worst recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s and ’40s;
• Recognition of ESPN, Radio Télévision Belge Francophone and the Arab States Broadcasting Union with IBC Innovation Awards for creation, management and delivery, respectively;
• A special recognition of the Metropolitan Opera of New York for its use of HDTV and satellite technology to bring performances to audiences around the world;
• Presentation of the Broadcast Engineering Pick Hit Awards to 14 companies for technology innovation selected by a panel of industry peers;
• A forum for exhibitions and sessions devoted to the continued development and exploitation of the technology necessary to create live and recorded stereoscopic 3-D content; and
• Exhibition of a 16-minute clip from movie producer James Cameron’s new 3-D movie “Avatar.”

IBC2010, with conference dates of Sept. 9-13 and exhibition dates of Sept. 10-14, will be held once again at the Amsterdam RAI. Look for Broadcast Engineering’s “IBC Update” to resume publication in July 2010. See you next year!
