Thai broadcasters expand to 50 transmitter sites
Thailand’s Public Relations Department (PRD) has begun an expansion project that involves 50 transmission sites. The project includes the installation of RF infrastructure at new and existing PRD sites, as well as the sites of other broadcasters.
At the Mukdahan transmission site, Thailand’s Public Relations Department will share ITV’s existing broadband UHF panel array, supplied by RFS during the network rollout.
Thai system integrator Loxley Public Company is upgrading the transmission sites, and has contracted wireless technology group Radio Frequency Systems (RFS) to supply much of the RF infrastructure.
PRD will share UHF television broadcasting facilities with ITV at a total of 12 sites. Currently, RFS has supplied RF combining systems for the first five of these sites, including a 20-kilowatt waveguide combiner at Sakon-Nakhon in Thailand’s northeast. Of the seven ITV sites to follow, both Ubon Ratchathani and Roi-Et will also receive 20-kilowatt combiner systems.
The use of combining systems allows the two PRD and ITV services to share the existing RF infrastructure at the selected ITV sites--including the broadband UHF panel arrays originally supplied by RFS during the ITV network’s deployment between 1997 and 1999.
PRD is establishing up to 11 new television-broadcasting sites around Thailand (four VHF and seven UHF). RFS is supplying antennas and associated HELIFLEX flexible feeder cable for these sites. A large RFS UHF panel array will be installed by Loxley to support a single 20-kilowatt service at Khon Kaen in northeastern Thailand. RFS has also supplied four single band VHF (Band III) arrays for new PRD sites around the country.
Standby transmitters were added to 24 of PRD’s existing transmission sites to address the issue of transmitter redundancy. RFS installed four-port u-link systems to enable switching between main and standby transmitters.
