TANDBERG TV to show Windows Media 9 series system for TV over DSL
At IBC2003, TANDBERG Television will demonstrate a TV-over-DSL system based on the Windows Media 9 Series codec. Key features include very low bandwidth real-time encoding of turnaround and local channels, IP multicast of live video, content capture and distribution, video-on-demand (VOD), EPG portal, set-top-boxes, live encryption and digital rights management (DRM).

The core of the new system is the TANDBERG EN5920 real-time hardware-encoding platform for Windows Media 9, a result of a collaboration between TANDBERG Television and Microsoft.
Launched at NAB earlier this year, the EN5920 will have its IBC debut in Amsterdam this next month. The EN5920 can be provided with the capability to transmit MPEG-2 video alongside the Windows Media 9 Series streams, making it useful for operators to test and transition to the new encoding platform.
“The data rates available on ADSL networks are typically from 500kbit/s up to 6 Mbit/s and therefore Telcos face different challenges regarding bandwidth,” said Johnny Dolvik, director of broadband at TANDBERG Television. “For those Telcos who have a higher rate of bandwidth available, MPEG-2 can provide a perfect solution and we continue to support development in that sphere with a number of planned IBC product launches. However, at the lower end of the data rate spectrum, Windows Media 9 enables Telcos to provide a competitive solution to today’s digital cable offerings. We’re finding that many Telcos are now talking to us about a transition path to Windows Media 9 to enable them to provide multiple channels of television on a single twisted pair connection.”
