TANDBERG MPEG-4 AVC system used for Germany’s HDTV launch


Looking to create a bandwidth and operationally efficient HD delivery system, DPC is deploying a TANDBERG Television HD video headend with statistical multiplexing and EN5990 HD MPEG-4 AVC encoders.

TANDBERG Television’s HD MPEG-4 AVC video encoding and distribution system has been chosen by DPC Digital Playout Centre for the launch of HDTV in Germany.

DPC is preparing for the launch of HD services to Europe’s largest TV marketplace. DPC playout customer Premiere AG has already announced that it will start broadcasting its first HD service in November. The Munich-based pay-TV operator will transmit HDTV content on three dedicated channels for sports, film and documentaries via the ASTRA satellite at 19.2 degrees East.

To create a bandwidth and operationally efficient HD delivery system, DPC is deploying a TANDBERG Television HD video headend with statistical multiplexing and EN5990 HD MPEG-4 AVC encoders. The use of HD MPEG-4 AVC encoding systems will enable DPC to achieve very efficient HD bandwidth utilization, more than halving the bit-rate required by MPEG-2, without a hit in image quality.
