Sony opens new LCD factory in China

Sony has unveiled plans for a new liquid-crystal display (LCD) production facility in China. The plant, to be located in the Chinaís Jiangsu province, will be used to assemble high-temperature polysilicon displays for products such as digital video and still cameras.

Scheduled to open in October with 200 workers, the plant will have an initial output of 600,000 units per month, but the capacity is set to rise with future expansions.

Excluding building costs, Sony said it plans to invest $4.2 million (500 million yen) in the project. The facility will be situated near an existing Sony factory that manufactures products such as lithium-ion batteries, televisions and Vaio notebooks.
