SBE Certification Program wins high recognition

The Society of Broadcast Engineers has announced that its certification program of been recognized by the National Skills Standards Board (NSSB). The SBE Certification Committee pursued and obtained the recognition earlier this month.

To receive the recognition, the SBE certification program underwent a comprehensive review to ensure that it meets specific quality requirements.

The Program of Certification offers several levels of certification for the broadcast industry. It began in 1975 as an industry response to the reduction in FCC operator licensing. Since then, the program has grown to include a group of sequential certifications that cover traditional broadcast engineering skills and knowledge, as well as certifications for television operators, radio operators and broadcast computer networking technologists.

The U.S. Congress established NSSB in response to a sharp increase in the number of industry certifications in the marketplace. NSSB Certification Recognition is designed to help users of certifications navigate through a confusing maze of certifications by identifying those that meet high professional and technical standards for quality assurance.

On June 10, 2003, the NSSB granted its recognition of the following SBE certification levels:

  • Certified Broadcast Technologist (CBT)

  • Certified Broadcast Engineer (CBRE/CBRE)

  • Certified Senior Broadcast Engineer (CSRE/CSTE)

  • Certified Professional Broadcast Engineer (CPBE)

  • Certified Broadcast Networking Technologist (CBNT)

  • Certified Audio Engineer (CEA)

  • Certified Video Engineer (CEV)

  • Certified Television Operator (CTO)

The Society of Broadcast Engineers is a professional organization with more than 5,800 members working at broadcast stations, post production, corporate, educational, government, military and other facilities. Members are active in 107 chapters in the United States and more than 30 other countries. SBE currently certifies more than 5,300 industry engineers and technicians.
