ReplayTV to drop ad skip

As was suggested earlier by company officials (see Beyond the Headlines 5-26-03 edition), ReplayTV’s upcoming 5500 models, to be introduced in August, will eliminate the capability of auto skipping commercials.

Current ReplayTV personal video recorders offer full commercial skip functionality that automatically skips over all commercials in recorded content, without the need for any user intervention. (Pictured ReplayTV 5000)

Current ReplayTV personal video recorders offer full commercial skip functionality that automatically skips over all commercials in recorded content, without the need for any user intervention.

Users don’t need to press a button or fast forward to skip commercials. With the new 5500 models, owners will have to “manually” skip over commercials using either fast-forward or the 30-second skip function that is standard on most other personal video recorders.

ReplayTV said the reason for the change is to “address the concerns of copyright holders.”
