Outgoing FCC Chairman Kevin Martin’s has final word about Net neutrality

January 20, 2009

Consumer Electronics Association CEO Gary Shapiro held a public dialog with FCC Chairman Kevin Martin. The fast-speaking chairman’s answers grew crisper during a brisk Q &A session with audience members. Martin spoke specifically to the issue of Net neutrality, opining that the FCC, even after his departure on Jan. 20, remains committed to an open Internet.

"The commission has demonstrated that we’re prepared to take action if we see a network operator blocking consumers’ access in any application," Martin said. "What we try to achieve is a balance that both rewards infrastructure investment and makes sure that an infrastructure investment in that platform has to be still open to any application or device that can be attached to it,” he said.

“Preserving that kind of openness on the edges of the platform is critical to innovation, but also making sure that you don’t over-impose regulation like the wholesale regulations, price control regulations, that discouraged investment in Internetwide network infrastructure,” he said. “I think there’s a way to do both that’s a benefit to innovation on the edges and a benefit to the network itself.”
