On2 Technologies adds TrueMotion VP6 feature to Media Excel HERA transcoder family

On2 Technologies and Media Excel last month signed a licensing agreement to implement On2’s TrueMotion VP6 digital video encoding solution as an added feature in Media Excel’s DSP-based transcoder acceleration module, the basis for the company’s HERA transcoder family.

The added functionality will provide encoding video streams in VP6 for live, real-time broadcasting of Adobe Flash video and offline transcoding to Flash for mobile and Web applications. The TrueMotion VP6 codec is the video compression technology behind Flash video. The HERA line, designed to allow real-time transcoding for the delivery of high-quality compressed video over IP networks irrespective of the content source or destination devices, can encode and broadcast in the MPEG-2, MPEG-4 Part 2, H.263 and MPEG-4 H.264 (AVC) formats, simultaneously and in multi-bit-rate form.

The availability of VP6 and Flash output on Media Excel’s systems is scheduled for later this year.
