OMVC keeps pace with mobile DTV deployments

January 7, 2011

The Open Mobile Video Coalition (OMVC), in an effort to keep pace with other similar mobile DTV proponents like the Mobile Content Venture and Mobile500, announced that one of its founding member station groups has accelerated its deployment efforts to get local TV station signals to portable devices.

ION Media Networks said that in the first quarter 2011 it will upgrade its stations in the nation’s top 10 DMAs, which largely broadcast syndicated programming, with new ATSC mobile DTV transmission exciters and other related equipment to enable TV content to be sent to mobile devices. While no details were provided, this presumably would include WPXN-TV in New York, WBPX-TV in Boston and KPXN-TV in Los Angeles. The independent station group owns and operates 59 full-power broadcast television stations (including one in each of the top 20 U.S. markets and 37 of the top 50 markets). Its broadcast television, cable and satellite distribution systems properties reach over 98 million television households.
