FCC ramps up for annual video competition report

The FCC has launched its annual look at the state of competition in the delivery of video programming with the Oct. 12 release of a Notice of Inquiry on the matter as required by Congress.

In the notice, the commission is looking for information on changes in the competitive environment over the past year that will help it as it prepares its annual Video Competition Report. Among the types of information the commission is seeking are data on:

  • changes in the market since last year’s report;
  • prospects for new entrants;
  • factors facilitating or impeding competition; and
  • how those factors impact consumer access to video programming

The FCC wants information from program distributors, including those providing:

  • cable systems
  • direct broadcast satellite
  • C-Band
  • broadband service
  • private cable
  • open video systems
  • wireless cable systems
  • local exchange carrier systems
  • utility-operated systems
  • commercial mobile radio and other wireless services
  • OTA broadcast TV stations
  • Internet and IPTV
  • home video sales and rental.
