FCC launches disaster reporting system
The FCC’s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau Sept. 11 launched a newly designed automated Disaster Information Reporting System (DIRS) to streamline reporting the status of communications providers to the commission in times of crisis.
The Web-based DIRS is a voluntary system intended for communications companies, including broadcasters and cable providers. DIRS includes data templates for different communications sectors. Participating communications providers log onto the system to input their emergency contact information after which they can voluntarily submit information regarding the status of their communications equipment, restoration efforts, power and access to fuel when a disaster occurs. Information filed via the system will be treated as confidential.
