Discreet acquires Unreal animation technology

Discreet, a division of Autodesk, has acquired Unreal Pictures, developers of the advanced, character animation tool, character studio.

This transaction brings in patents and core character studio technology, allowing Discreet to further advance intuitive character animation.

Unreal Pictures’ research software scientists Michael Girard and Susan Amkraut, along with developer Michael Zyracki, will join Discreet as a result of this agreement. They will work with Discreet’s core animation development team in San Francisco and Montreal.

Unreal’s character studio works as an extension to Discreet’s professional 3-D animation software, 3ds max, allowing artists to create advanced character animations, simplify complex animation tasks, and seamlessly incorporate motion capture data into animation production workflows.
