Delta College PBS station transitions to automated multichannel operation

WDCQ-TV, a PBS affiliate on the Delta College campus in University Center, Mi., has undergone a complete analog-to-digital conversion, now offering four standard definition streams plus one HD stream during primetime hours.

The DST design team employed the company’s “palletization” method of off-site pre-build by wiring and building the equipment racks at its Irwindale, Calif. headquarters.

Serving the Flint-Saginaw-Bay City television market, systems integrator Digital System Technology (DST) helped develop the fully automated station, putting its own stamp on incomplete station designs provided by an outside consultant. “After we were left stranded by our consultant, DST saved the project by filling in the holes of the incomplete designs and making improvements where needed,” said Barry Baker, the station’s general manager.

WDCQ has been transformed from a manual single-channel station to a completely automated, unmanned multichannel operation. Both budgetary reasons and long-range operational strategies were behind the decision, the station said.

DST’s work was centered on the master control center, feeds room for server technology, and a core equipment terminal room. The DST design team employed the company’s “palletization” method of off-site pre-build by wiring and building the equipment racks at its Irwindale, Calif. headquarters. The remaining integration work was completed over a four-week period on-site at the station.
