Broadcasters continue to lobby against use of white space

July 30, 2007

Television broadcasters continued their mantra against the use of low-power unlicensed wireless devices in the white space— the vacant adjacent channel next to an operating television channel.

In a letter to John Kneuer, chief of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), the heads of the NAB and MSTV, the major broadcaster lobby groups, warned that the use of white space will cause interference with broadcast signals, and poses “a significant risk to the digital transition.”

The broadcasters repeated their opposition to plans by the White Spaces Coalition, a group of consumer electronics and computer companies, to use the vacant channel spectrum for a new generation of wireless devices. They urged the NTIA to oppose any FCC action that would open use of the spectrum, which they argued would turn the DTV transition “on its head.”
