WTVD Installs New Baron Services Weather Radar

ABC O&O WTVD in the Raleigh-Durham, N.C. market has installed a new 1 megawatt Doppler weather radar system, the VHDD 1000-C Doppler XP system.

The unit, which was supplied by Baron Services of Huntsville, Ala., is mounted atop a 100 foot tower and can track storms with high precision. Rotational speed is such that it can provide updated cell information every 10 seconds, according to the company. The system also features 256 color levels to better enable meteorologists and viewers to gauge precipitation intensity.

“Every second counts in severe weather,” said Chris Hohmann, a meteorologist at WTVD. “The Doppler XP will definitely help us give viewers more time to prepare and more time to stay safe, because we can give them critical information faster and in greater detail.”
