WLKY-TV Upgrades With Utah Scientific

Hearst-Argyle owned CBS affiliate WLKY-TV in Louisville, Ky., recently purchased Utah Scientific's new HD/SD routing and master control switchers.

The station has ordered a Utah-400 144x144 router configured for 112x88 HD video, as well as the HD/SD-2020 digital master control switcher. The companies said WLKY currently broadcasts one analog SD stream, which will play out through the router and master control--under control of a Harris automation system--when they are installed in the first quarter of 2007.

"We consciously chose a new router that was full HD even though we knew we'd still need to switch SD as well," said Jim Mercer, chief engineer at WLKY. "The trick is that we can just pass SD signals through the router for now, and we'll save the expense of having to upgrade the router from SD to HD in the future. Additionally, the Utah-400 makes it quick and easy to route multiple inputs for the master control."

When the installation is complete, signals from all equipment in the facility will be routed via the Utah-400, including a wide variety of videotape machines, Pinnacle video servers, and multiple satellite receiving systems.
