The Universal HD channel plans to air the marathon “Live Earth: The Concerts for a Climate in Crisis” both live and with taped highlights for an estimated 22 straight hours, beginning on Saturday, July 7. What’s being billed by its parent company, NBC Universal, and its environment-oriented promoters as “an unprecedented global event” will feature more than 100 musical artists, according to the concert’s official Web site.
The global “green” event hopes to attract an audience of as many as two billion viewers to focus attention on the “global climate crisis” and what can be done to reduce global warming. Along with the Universal HD channel, the various networks of NBC Universal also plan to air the concerts being staged on several continents. NBC Universal said its HD outlet will be the only HD source airing the entire event live, according to Collider.com.
Universal HD plans to air the weekend multiconcerts in North America from 4 a.m. EDT on July 7 to 2 a.m. on July 8. Microsoft is also contributing some of its resources and dedicating a special Web site to the international enclave.
