Tandberg Implements Turnkey Fiber/Satellite Video Network for Intelsat

Intelsat is upgrading its international video distribution system with products and implementation services supplied by Tandberg Television. The new capability includes a hybrid fiber and satellite system that will connect six U.S. cities to Intelsat's hub in Fuchsstadt, Germany.

The new installations will be able to handle both standard-definition and high-definition feeds. Tandberg's contribution to the project includes its MPEG-2 encoding and decoding equipment, as well as its nCompass monitoring system to monitor all the equipment in the network. This monitoring capability will be installed in Intelsat's video operations center in Washington.

In addition to supplying its own equipment, Tandberg is also suppling third-party products including ATM switches and routers. In addition to hardware, the company is providing integration and implementation services, developing a turnkey system for Intelsat. The new system is expected to be completed by mid-2004.
