Sony Upgrades XPRI to Support Its Optical Disc System

Sony is using its XPRI platform to help complete workflow efficiencies realized by its new optical-disc based XDCAM system by introducing a new mobile and new desktop version of its nonlinear editing system.

XPRI Mobile is a Windows-based non-linear field editing software application that runs on most laptop PCs and operates as a tightly integrated system with XPRI MetaStation and newsroom systems.

XPRI MetaStation desktop editor's compatibility with XDCAM and XPRI Mobile allows users working in the studio to instantly reproduce timelines created in the field simply by importing a fully compatible edit decision list (EDL), including effects and titles.

The two new systems will allow editors to capture high-resolution A/V content simultaneously in a low-resolution, frame accurate version called proxy data. Field crews can transfer this proxy data to their studios at faster speeds than real time (up to 20x with XPEI Mobile and 50x with XPRI MetaStation) so in-house producers can begin assembling EDLs almost immediately following acquisition.

XPRI MetaStation also features an auto-conforming capability that enables full-resolution A/V material to be uploaded automatically using an EDL created on XPRI Mobile. In addition to MXF file import and export, an array of effects, including 3D, are available with real-time 3D effects available as an option.

Both NLE systems edit high-resolution DVCAM and MPEG IMX content (30 Mbps for XPRI Mobile and 30/40/50 Mbps for XPRI MetaStation) from the XDCAM system.

Sony will demonstrate the two new editors as part of its tapeless workflow system at NAB2004 in April in Las Vegas.
