Sony Official Sponsor of ESPN 3D

This year’s Consumer Electronics Show featured lots of 3D offerings and announcements, with few larger in scale than the new ESPN 3D network, sponsored by Sony.

ESPN announced it would launch the network in June 2010, featuring no less than 85 live, 3D sporting events in the first year, starting with the opening match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Sony was named as the network’s official sponsor, with exclusive rights to the 2011 BCS National Championship Game, 13 regular season college football games and the Summer X Games. Sony HD technology will be the choice camera for ESPN 3D broadcasts, including college and NBA basketball games and up to 25 FIFA World Cup matches.

Sony recently announced the release of a full line of 3D HD 1080P high frame rate BRAVIA televisions. The company plans to install approximately 11,000 4K digital cinema projection systems, 3,000 equipped for 3D.

ESPN 3D broadcast trials date back two years, when the network presented a USC vs. Ohio State college football game in select theaters and on the USC campus. Feedback from students and the media was positive.
