Broadband services in the new 3.65 GHz band could soon become a reality with the FCC's approval of Redline Communications' RedMAX AN-100U WiMAX base station. Redline said this was the first 3.65 GHz WiMAX product to be approved for operation in the United States.
Although 3.65 GHz systems require a license, any qualified applicant can apply for one. And as the licenses are not exclusive, no applicant is barred from obtaining a license, even if the band is being used by other licensees in the same area.
Michael Anderson, president of wireless Internet service provider PDQLink, in Illinois, said that broadband performance and interoperability of Redline's WiMAX systems would help service providers across the United States deliver a range of communications services.
"The unique licensing scheme for the 3.65 GHz band put in place by the FCC provides service providers additional tools to deploy affordable alternative broadband services across the U.S., while enabling them to share the spectrum with existing satellite owners that also support essential communications services," Anderson said.
PDQLink is currently testing Redline's 3.65 GHz RedMAX products.
Kevin Suitor, vice president for marketing and business development at Redline, said that his company was pleased with the decision to allow more operators to deliver broadband wireless services to rural and underserved areas.
