Qualcomm's MediaFLO Taps Thomson for Transmitters

Thomson recently announced that the company's ULTIMATE line of UHF transmitters had been selected for MediaFLO service by QUALCOMM. Thomson will be filling an order for multiple units of the 5.2 kW transmitters, equipped with an embedded FLO exciter.

The order follows a long period of co-developmental work between QUALCOMM and the former Thales Broadcast & Media unit, which is now part of the Grass Valley division of Thomson.

"The integration of Thomson transmitters with FLO technology brings us another step closer to delivering MediaFLO services to wireless operators," said Jeff Lorbeck, senior vide president and general manager of MediaFLO USA.

FLO technology was engineered to deliver high quality digital audio and video transmissions in a mobile environment.

"Thomson is pleased to be a part of the next evolution in digital content delivery, with new services such as mobile TV," said Marc Valentin, president of the Grass Valley business within Thomson. "Grass Valley's focus on both FLO technology and DVB-H specifications demonstrates our commitment to helping service providers be successful in this new and exciting market segment, whatever platform they choose."

The platform provides delivery of up to 20 thirty-frame per second streaming channels at QVGA quality levels, and 10 stereo audio channels within six MHz of spectrum space.
