Chinese Central Television, the government-run broadcast network, recently installed 50 Kaleido multi-image display processors in preparation for its extensive Olympics coverage in Beijing. Montreal-based Miranda Technologies, which makes the processors, said CCTV (and CCTV-HD) will use the units for monitoring two channels dedicated to the games.
During the Olympics, CCTV-HD will convert itself into the Olympic HD Channel and devote its entire broadcast day (and night) to live games coverage. Although very few Chinese homes thus far in urban areas (and virtually none in outlying regions) have HD reception, eight cities in the world’s most populous nation can now technically receive HD programming: Beijing, Guangzhou, Qingdao, Qinhuangdao, Shanghai, Shenyang, Shenzhen and Tianjin.
Two Kaleido-X processors and more than a dozen smaller Kaleido-Alto-HD and Kaleido-Quad multi-viewers have been installed for master control monitoring at CCTV’s International Broadcast Center. (Miranda said another two dozen or more Kaleido processors may be used at various the Olympic stadiums for production monitoring.)
Two new CCTV HD production trucks also been equipped with Kaleido multi-viewers, according to Miranda—including one 46.5-foot mobile facility fitted with 20 HD cameras.
