Nashville Public TV Uses DTV to Provide Emergency Services

Nashville Public TV is planning to use an IP based datacasting system designed by SpectraRep to provide material such as training videos, multimedia course materials, teacher and student resources and emergency warnings to local government agencies, public safety organizations and educational institutions. NPT President and CEO Steve Blass said, "This is a gigantic step for NPT, allowing us to provide a whole new generation of public services to make our communities safer and better informed, and help teachers teach and children learn. This new initiative aligns perfectly with our public service mission to use technology to serve unmet needs in education, public safety and homeland security."

NPT plans to distribute training programming for the Mayor's Office of Emergency Management, the Nashville Fire Department, and the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency to demonstrate the technology, which it calls NPTcast. An article on www.tennessean.com by Larry McCormack said government agencies could be asked pay for it. The article, NPT tests idea to provide digital emergency services, quoted Steve Blass saying that it makes more sense for NPT to use its extra digital bandwidth to create a closed TV delivery system than to produce its own HD programs, which it doesn't have the budget for.
