Motorola Requests Broadcast TV Frequency for Mobile TV Testing

WD2XYR is one of the licenses in the FCC Office of Engineering and Technology's list of experimental licenses granted between Sept. 1 and Oct. 1, 2006. WD2XYR allows Motorola to use 482-488 MHz (TV Channel 16) fixed in Libertyville, Schaumburg, and Arlington Heights, Ill., to "test digital video system performance and demonstrate functionality to potential purchasers."
In the narrative statement included with Motorola's application for the license, Motorola states that the license would "replace and supplement" its existing special temporary, including the addition of two additional sites in the Chicago area near Libertyville. Motorola said it would use DVB-H equipment from Axcera at all locations, including a 90 W DVB-T transmitter at Libertyville and 50 W transmitters at Schaumburg and Arlington Heights.
All transmitters will have stringent mask filters. The mode of emission is specified as 6M00F2W, DVB-H, COFDM. Motorola said other emission modes and modulation techniques may be used, but "in no event will the emissions extend beyond the frequency band requested." The Schaumburg and Arlington Heights transmitters will be operated at a reduced output power of 33 watts and an ERP of 100 watts. The Libertyville facility ERP is 61 watts.
Motorola said that it will coordinate its operations with the Society of Broadcast Engineers and "will not operate on any other requested channels without SBE approval."
Last week's RF Report described WD2XSH, the experimental license the American Radio Relay League received for operations on 505-510 kHz.
