Fabless semiconductor company MaxLinear announced Monday that is has shipped more than 50 million TV tuner ICs. The company said this achievement is largely attributed to MaxLinear establishing a leading position in early adopter mobile TV markets and success in terrestrial DTV markets.
“This milestone is a great recognition of the performance and value of our devices and the close relationships we’ve built with our customer,” said Kishore Seendripu, MaxLinear’s chief executive. “Japan has been a pioneering market for mobile TV. The widespread use of mobile TV technology in Japan and Korea during live events, such as the World Baseball Classic, has demonstrated the mass-market appetite for mobile TV. This should prove enticing for mobile operators hunting for new revenue opportunities.”
Seendripu noted that his company had also expanded the mobile tuner technology into other products including fixed DTV receivers and set top boxes.
MaxLinear's tuners are based on standard CMOS architecture. The MxL500x series, consumes only 300 mW in a 5mm-by-5mm package. It supports ATSC, ATSC-M/H, DVB-T and DTMB/CMMB standards, with versions available for set-top box, TV, PND, and PCTV markets as well as automotive applications. The MxL5007T complies with the ATSC A/74 recommended practice. The MxL131RF supports 13-segment ISDB-T and Brazilian SBTVD terrestrial DTV standards. Their MxL70xx series is designed for ISDB-T mobile applications. The MxL703RM, the latest offering in that series, consumes only 40 mW in a 1.57mm-by-1.57mm package.
