LCD HD-SD Shows Breakout Growth in Third Quarter

LCD TV panel shipments (HD and SD) continued to post impressive results globally by growing 31 percent on a quarter-to-quarter (Q/Q) basis, and 152 percent year-to-year (Y/Y), to 2.6 million units per month, according to flat-screen researcher DisplaySearch this week.

Revenues for large-area TFT (thin film transfer) LCD panels increased 29 percent Q/Q and 51 percent Y/Y to an estimated $12.4 billion in Q3 of 2005, while LCD TV revenues were up 136 percent Y/Y. (By comparison, notebook PC panel revenues increased 32 percent Q/Q and only 4 percent Y/Y).

Most impressive was LCD TV panel revenues, which grew 48 percent Q/Q and 136 percent Y/Y to $3.5 billion in the 3Q of this calendar year.

By supplier, Samsung says it captured the top position in large-area TFT LCD unit shipments in the Q3 with growth of 23 percent Q/Q and 70 percent Y/Y-- to an average of 4.09 million units per month. LG Philips was right behind with 4.06 million units per month. AU Optronics remained in the third position with a nearly 14-percent share of unit shipments in Q3.
