Four Los Angeles broadcasters have joined together to share broadcasting facilities on Mount Wilson. The broadband antenna system, designed and manufactured by Radio Frequency Systems, will support seven combined analog and digital services with the capacity to accommodate12.
Broadcast consultant S. Merrill Weiss has been working with RFS, infrastructure provider American Tower Corp. and transmitter manufacturer Axcera to develop a multisystem digital/analog solution for KDOC, KXLA, KOCE and KJLA.
The resulting site on Mount Wilson has dual combined antenna systems that can accommodate up to 12 digital or analog services from Channel 32 to 56. Initial operation will incorporate four digital and three analog services. RFS also developed a full wavelength combiner that can handle the high combinations of peak power and frequency in the system.
By the time the DTV deadline is reached, nearly all of Los Angeles' broadcasters will be operating from Mount Wilson-a projected 43 out of 50 services.
