KTRV Installs Sundance Automation System

KTRV-TV, the Fox affiliate in Boise, Idaho, has installed a Sundance Digital FastBreak NXT Automation system, allowing the station to now fully automate control of all on-air operations.

The station, owned by Block Communications, initially installed FastBreak software in 2006 to automate interstitials. The upgrade to a full FastBreak system allows full automation of the simulcast analog-digital channel, including syndicated programming via Intelli-Sat, Sundance’s recording-management system for satellite and other incoming feeds.

The NXT automation system also controls tape decks, a Thomson Grass Valley switcher, Venus router, Saturn switcher and two Omneon Media decks.

“Our main objective was to lower costs and allow the station to operate more efficiently. Our on-air look has improved and there is less downtime and maintenance,” said Daniel Paixao, chief engineer for KTRV. “We also get payback by saving on tape costs. We’re migrating to a tapeless environment and can now record directly to the media decks.”
