Dolby Laboratories and MIPS Technologies Inc. are ready to deliver the next chapter in audio technology for set-top box, HD DVD and Blu-ray disc applications.
MIPS, a processor IP company, is the first processor concern to support Dolby's Digital Plus codec technology. Digital Plus provides high-quality audio with less bandwidth than the current Dolby Digital, while maintaining the same quality level.
"With the increased levels of sophistication in the Dolby Digital Plus format, chip design is more intricate and requires a considerable amount of time to implement, optimize, and approve for consumer SoCs," said Page Haun, worldwide director for Dolby Laboratories' broadcast segment. "We're pleased that our joint efforts with MIPS Technologies will result in a process that will reduce months of engineering time, decrease risk, and dramatically accelerate time-to-market for silicon designers using industry-standard MIPS cores."
Dolby Digital Plus technology is optimized for all MIPS32 processor cores and in available immediately as part of the MIPS Technologies Soft Audio Suite.
