Dolby Brings 5.1 to Super Bowl Ads

At least five commercials during Super Bowl XXXVIII--three from a beer company and two from an American car manufacturer--will be presented in Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound. While three out of the last four Super Bowl broadcasts have been presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 on DTV, and most Super Bowls since 1990 have been broadcast in Dolby Pro Logic on analog TV, the sound would collapse into two-dimensional stereo or mono sound during commercial breaks.

Viewers with Pro Logic II-enabled home theater systems will hear the game and commercials in Pro Logic II, regardless of the TV signal they are receiving. According to Dolby, over 100 million households are equipped with Pro Logic II and Dolby Surround decoders.
