Dish Network is getting set to launch a new HD DVR and upgrade a current model this summer that will permit recording a virtual unlimited amount of HD/SD content because it will employ swappable hard drives that can be used as detachable storage units.
Recorded content can be set apart from the box’s internal hard drive (and its inherent storage limits) and re-attached at a user’s discretion. Dish’s new ViP722 HD DVR (and its current ViP622 model) will undergo a firmware upgrade next month that will activate their USB ports.
The VCRs will be able to capture and play HD/SD content from their internal hard drives--or the external hard drive connected via USB--according to Big Picture, Big Sound.
The ViP722’s internal drive will hold about 55 hours of HD, or 350 hours of SD.
