CES2007: DirecTV Eyes 100 HD Channels Soon; CNN Going HD
January 10, 2007
DirecTV Group Inc. has signed agreements for up to 60 HD channels from major TV networks as part of its goal to launch as many as 100 HD outlets this year.
The channels, expected to launch in the third quarter, will include HD versions of the networks of NBC Universal and Turner Networks, among others, according to Reuters.
CNN also revealed plans on Jan. 9 to start a simultaneous HD channel of its own by the fall, according to TV Week.
DirecTV plans to allow subscribers to connect to Internet videos from their PCs, as well as a portable version of its satellite service that literally fits in a suitcase, called "Sat-Go."
"Where the world is going is into HD," said a DirecTV exec. "None of the wireless products [at CES] is going to bring you 100 channels of HD."
