Canada: CBC Doubles Hockey Night Coverage

Last Saturday night, March 31, Canada's legendary legions of hockey fans were afforded HD programming that many probably thought was literally twice as good as before: Both games of the CBC's traditional "Hockey Night in Canada" were made available as an HD doubleheader, thanks to a second mobile production truck named "Encore." (The first mobile unit is dubbed "Premiere.")

The second unit now means that Saturday night hockey coverage will continue at its doubleheader pace for the remainder of the current season and into the 2007 Stanley Cup playoffs, according to the government-funded broadcaster.

The CBC's new mobile production facility is based in Toronto to handle the nation's Eastern broadcasts, with the original remote truck stationed out of Calgary for handling the Western matches.
