Blu-ray's YTD Share of Disc Sales at 10 Percent

Blu-ray's share of the overall video-disc market has shot up nearly 138 percent on a year-to-date basis through mid-November, although the 1080p format owns only a 10-percent share of overall video-disc sales through the past 12 months. (On a week-to-week basis, Blu-ray's share has sometimes risen to 16-17 percent in 2009.)

Standard DVD title sales of movies and TV series fell more than 7.5 percent in the past year, but its overall sales were just under $8 billion — while Blu-ray's marked increase (relatively speaking) in overall revenue was about $866 million, according to Home Media Research.

The Blu-ray-to-DVD title sales ratio likely will slide dramatically in Blu-ray's favor in the next couple of years as price points on Blu-ray packaged content (and Blu-ray players) continue to fall in the months ahead.

In the early holiday sales season, basic Blu-ray players have been priced under $100, and one model for under $80 (Walmart), while some Blu-ray titles of older films are being featured at Best Buy, Costco, Target, Walmart and Amazon.com for around $8.
