BBC America to Celebrate HD Step-up with British Sci-Fi

BBC Worldwide in London recently announced it plans to kick off the first week of BBC America HD in the states on Monday, July 20, with a lot of science fiction shows—a staple of BBC fare for many years—to include “Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead,” “Torchwood,” “Being Human,” and the third-season finale of “Primeval.”

Kicking things off the night of July 20 (9 p.m. EDT) and stripped across the first five nights will be “Torchwood: Children of Earth.” Capping it off will be “Primeval (Season 3),” which will conclude on Saturday, July 25 (8 p.m.)

Premiering on BBC America HD on July 25 (immediately following “Primeval”) will be “Being Human”—the not-altogether accurate title of a program which will delve into the lives of three twenty-somethings and their “secret double-lives”… as a ghost, werewolf, and vampire. A reality show it’s not.

On Sunday, July 26 (8 p.m.), the first of the final four “Doctor Who” specials will premiere.

BBC America will continue to air its nightly newscast at 7 p.m. weekdays (although a BBC statement does not specifically mention whether the Washington-based cast also will premiere in HD starting the week of July 20).
