Amazon Offers Far More Blu-ray over HD DVD Titles in Sale

In what may turn out to be a next-gen sale that beats even its own holiday price cuts of several weeks ago that were designed to lure holiday consumers into becoming Blu-ray Disc or HD DVD customers, Amazon.com last weekend began offering scores of select titles in both formats at savings of 30 to 50 percent.

Yet perhaps noteworthy is the fact that three times as many Blu-ray titles as HD DVD offerings are affected by Amazon’s price cuts. Some of the 225-plus Blu-ray movies include “Superbad,” “Casino Royale” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” Also included is “Spider-Man: The High Definition Trilogy.”

Among a roster of more than 80 HD DVD titles are “Stardust,” “Transformers,” “Stardust” and “Serenity,” the sci-fi movie spin-off of the short-lived cult TV series “Firefly.” Some titles in both HD formats are going in the $15 to $18 range, which are currently under price points for a lot of standard DVD titles.
