In the Eighth Report and Order, Fifth Notice of Proposed Rule Making, and Order in Docket 00-258, the FCC reallocated the 2155-2160 MHz band, currently used by the Broadband Radio Service (BRS), to Advanced Wireless Systems (AWS). The spectrum from 2155-2175 MHz was designed for use by AWS. Prior to this Order, AWS had spectrum at 2110-2155 MHz and 2175-2180 MHz. With the addition of this new spectrum, AWS will now have 70 MHz of contiguous spectrum, which the FCC said would "promote the rapid introduction of new technologies and service offerings" and "will foster the use of the highest potential spectrum."
The FCC noted that it may need to negotiate new or modified agreements to allow more flexible use of the spectrum along the Mexican and Canadian borders. The Notice of Proposed Rule Making part of the FCC release deals with the relocation of BRS in the 2150-2160/62 MHz band, and proposed that major modifications and extensions to existing BRS systems in the 2150-2160 MHz band be authorized on a secondary basis to emerging technology systems after the effective date of the Report and Order in this proceeding.
