1080p: Sony Touts New Fall Models

Sony has introduced half a dozen Bravia brand LCD models and five SXRD-based (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) rear-projection units, which include HDMI inputs reportedly capable of 1920 x 1080p resolution. The six Bravia LCD models will feature 40- and 46-inch screens, along with a 32-inch WXGA unit (1366 x 768).

Sony's announcement came last weekend at the annual Home Entertainment Show in Los Angeles (June 1-4). (The company continues to refer to 1080p in its marketing as "full HDTV.") According to published reports, the new LCDs will be presented in a trio of Sony product lines: V Series, XBR 2 Series, and XBR 3 Series.

XBR models will include a so-called "floating glass" design. The higher-priced XBR3 Series includes the 46-inch KDL-46XBR3 and 40-inch KDL-40XBR3. Both models will feature native 1080p and three HDMI inputs. First shipments are planned for September.
