1080p Full HD on the up as plasma panels see weaker demand

New research from analysts firm Display Search show falling demand for plasma display panels (PDP) in the US and Chinese markets during Q1 of 2008. Demand in other regions remained high during this period as did the uptake of 1080p (or Full HD) models, resulting in a year on year growth of 54 percent in Q2'08.

This rapid growth of 1080p saw year on year revenue increase by 28 percent, with a quarter on quarter increase of six percent, during the same period.

The significant increase in 1080p shipments was driven by new 46" models and 1080p share gains in the 42" and 50" size categories, leading to a an overall increase in 1080p volume of 333 percent year on year, with 1080p now accounting for 21 percent of all PDP panel shipments.

However, weaker demand and increasing inventory in China since late March through April led to a 25 percent quarter on quarter decrease in 32" PDP panel shipments in Q2'08, a previously rapid growth size category.

"As the 1080p penetration of 40"+ LCD TVs rises to 72 percent in developed countries and 47 percent in emerging regions in Q1'08, it is important for PDP panel makers and PDP TV brands to be competitive in 1080p, especially in 50" and larger size categories," said Hisakazu Torii, DisplaySearch Vice President of TV Market Research.
